A Rare Case of a Large Plunging Ranula with Cervical Extension: Imaging, Diagnosis, and Management
نویسنده
چکیده
A plunging ranula is a mucous extravasation cyst appearing as a swelling in the submental and submandibular regions. We describe a rare case of massive deep diving cervical ranula involving multiple tissue spaces and extending to the upper mediastinum. The unusual course of events following surgical excision of the submandibular gland is presented. A Computerized Tomography (CT) scan revealed the true extent of the lesion and its relationship to the surrounding structures. Other imaging techniques and diagnostic tests are discussed and relevant literature is reviewed.

Submandibular gland mucocele presenting as a lateral neck swelling
Mucus extravasation cysts or mucoceles are an extremely rare occurrence in the major salivary glands. We report upon an unusual case of a submandibular gland mucocele presenting as a neck lump. It should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis of swellings in the lateral neck. Diagnosis and management are complicated by their similarity to the plunging or cervical ranula and diffe...
متن کاملPlunging ranula: surgical management of case series and the literature review
Plunging ranulas are rare; report of this condition is particularly limited in our environment. We present case series in children; with all cases having both oral and cervical components. It is important to note this type of presentation of plunging ranula and their appropriate management.
متن کاملPlunging Ranula: A Case Report
Plunging ranulas, also known as deep, diving, cervical or deep plunging ranula, usually appear in conjunction with oral ranula. Rarely, these ranulas may arise independent of oral swelling. A rare case of plunging ranula without oral swelling is discussed along with review of literature.
متن کاملA Rare Cause of Acute Respiratory Distress: Cervical Ranula.
Plunging or cervical ranula is a mucus extravasation pseudocyst arising from the sublingual gland that is located below the mylohyoid muscle. Clinically, if large enough, cervical ranulas can affect swallowing, speech, chewing, and even breathing. The acute presentation of ranulas, which are clinically known as slow-growing, painless masses, is rare. In this study, we present a case of cervical...
متن کاملRecurrent plunging ranula of the neck.
The reported case describes a mismanaged extensive recurrent plunging ranula that occupied a large portion of the neck. The ranula is usually clinically diagnosed. However, absence of visible intra-oral signs may mislead the diagnosis and leads to improper surgical management. Presence of amylase in the aspirated fluids is an important aid in the differential diagnosis. Thereby confirming the s...
